Who is Brutalwares?
Getting to know the artist behind the concrete.
Brutalwares is born out of a passion for Brutalist Architecture and the relentless pursuit of the perfect concrete texture.
My work focuses on capturing what I perceive to be the beauty of Brutalist Architecture and the often overlooked and derided concrete that makes up these structures. Not content with merely painting for myself, I want to use my work to challenge perceptions, help people see these magnificent buildings in a fresh way, and get them talking about what makes Brutalism so special.
Why Concrete?
I started out as a fan, wanting to find some Brutalist Art for my own home. I found that a surprising amount of artists neglected what I felt to be the most interesting detail of Brutalist Architecture - the concrete texture. Having pursued art in different forms for many years, I decided that I’d make the kind of art I wanted to find. Taking inspiration from the Brutalist landmarks around my native North-East such as the Apollo Pavilion, I began to paint what I was passionate about.
Alongside Brutalism, I was enthralled by the Vaporwave microgenre of music, along with its liminal 80’s and 90’s aesthetics and colours, which I found to be a perfect tool to create “beautiful Brutalism”. Contrasting vivid colours and calm, positive energy against the cool, industrial concrete subject, my work began to take on a new and exciting life.
The more I painted, the more I found myself trying to replicate the concrete texture further. Simply implying the texture was not enough. I had to recreate it on a macro level, and develop a formula of steps and layers, which I still use (and evolve) to this day.
Chasing this texture became an obsession, just as much as a passion. It is that obsession which has carried me to where I am today.
